Matthew Stephenson

Casey’s General Stores

Matthew W. Stephenson joined the Casey’s Team as the Director of Learning & Development on October 9, 2017 to establish a Learning & Development Department in capable of supporting the strategic goals of the organization.  The L&D Department consists of Technical Writing, Blended Learning, Talent Management, and Leader Development.  The Team is capable of developing all publications, job aids, digital learning, and instructor led curriculum to meet the company’s requirements for developing soft, technical, onboarding, and leadership skills.  Some standard curriculum consists of Leadership Excellence Certifications, Store Manager Basic Course, and Kitchen Manager’s Course.

Prior to joining the Casey’s team, Matt served 24 years in the United States Army, with his last assignment as State Training Officer, Joint Forces Headquarters, Iowa Army National Guard.  

Other key military assignments include; Officer-In-Charge of the Regional Training Institute – Iowa, Operations of the 1-168th Infantry Battalion stationed in Paktia Province Afghanistan, Assistant Professor of Military Science at Iowa State University, various overseas and State side assignments as Company Commander and Platoon Leader, and enlisted service with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.  

His highest awards include 2 x Bronze Star Medals for service in combat zones, and 2 x Meritorious Service Medal for leadership.  

Matt holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Iowa State University, and a Masters of Business Administration from Grantham University.  Highlights of military education include; Strategic Planning and Management Course, Command and General Staff Officer’s Course, Training Institute Pre-Command Course, the Combined Arms Exercise, Infantry Captain Career Course, Anti-Terrorism Level II, U.S. Army Ranger School, U.S. Army Airborne School, and U.S. Army Air Assault School.
